On Friday, December 11, Sim Shalom the virtual Synagogue celebrates the second night of Hanukkah with five guest cantors. Rabbi Steve Blane and Sim Shalom have offered services online since 2009. To celebrate Hanukkah and the Festival of Lights this year he is joined by five (5) Cantors and one (1) Rabbi from across the country. All were ordained by Rabbi Blane and the Jewish Spiritual Leaders’ Institute (JSLI). Although a relatively minor holiday in strictly religious terms, Hanukkah has attained major cultural significance in North America and elsewhere among secular Jews as a Jewish alternative to Christmas, and is often celebrated correspondingly fervently.
The Sim Shalom Online Hanukkah concert and celebration will be a rich presentation of varied selections of Hanukkah classics as well as Shabbat melodies that feature each of their unique voices. The guests include Cantor Denise Heitmann of Rhode Island, Cantor Kristin Gustavson from California, Cantor Nina Fine who hails from Florida and Cantor Joanna Lind of Illinois. Also joining Rabbi Steve will be Rabbi Deborah McKenzie from Maryland. Rabbi Deborah leads services for Sim Shalom each Monday evening. Many of the guests joined Sim Shalom for the High Holidays.
